Start with Use Case, Not Hype
Before looking at brands, decide where and how you will wear the watch:
- Office and formal settings
- Daily casual wear
- Active weekends and travel
Your use case should drive your choice of size, water resistance, and strap style.
The Five Specs That Actually Matter
1) Case Size and Lug-to-Lug
Many first-time buyers focus only on case diameter. Lug-to-lug distance is often more important for wrist comfort and visual balance.
2) Movement
Look for a movement with broad service support. Well-known calibers from Seiko, Citizen, and Miyota are practical choices for long-term ownership.
3) Crystal
Sapphire offers better scratch resistance than mineral crystal. If your budget allows, it is usually worth prioritizing.
4) Water Resistance
For most people, 100m water resistance is a sweet spot for everyday use.
5) Strap and Bracelet Quality
A good bracelet elevates daily wear. If the bracelet is weak but the head is strong, plan for a quality aftermarket strap.
Budget Split Strategy
A practical first-watch budget split:
- 80% on the watch itself
- 20% reserved for strap changes or a bracelet upgrade
This approach gives you flexibility without overspending.
